When homeowners take on a renovation, every detail matters—and staircases are no exception. Recently, we worked with a client remodelling their first floor, completely transforming the layout. Naturally, this meant designing a new staircase to suit the refreshed aesthetic and functionality of their home.
For this project, a 3-winder staircase proved to be the ideal solution. However, like all bespoke staircase designs, it came with unique challenges that required careful planning and craftsmanship.
Overcoming Challenges: Limited Space and Tight Headroom
One of the most significant hurdles in this project was the restricted headroom between the bottom tread and the stair well. To tackle this, we adjusted the width of the opening, strategically shortening the staircase length to achieve the necessary clearance without compromising usability.
At the base of the staircase, space between the wall and the newel post was limited to just 750-800mm. To improve movement around the area, we incorporated a bullnose tread at the bottom step. This clever design pushed the newel post back by 200mm, creating additional clearance above the tread and ensuring the staircase was comfortable and accessible.
While this solution is temporary—our client plans to extend their home in the future and remove the adjacent wall—the bullnose tread ensures the staircase is functional and stylish in the meantime.
The End Result: A Future-Ready, Bespoke Staircase
Our tailored approach ensured the staircase fit seamlessly into the current remodelled layout while anticipating the client’s future home expansion. The result? A beautifully crafted staircase that combines practicality with elegance, elevating the overall look and feel of the space.
