At Axton’s Staircases, we thrive on solving unique challenges—and this recent project in Sidcup was no exception. Tasked with creating a staircase solution for a double-storey extension, the goal was to connect the charm of an older home with the functionality of a new space. It was a perfect opportunity to blend thoughtful design with expert craftsmanship.
Tackling the Challenges of an Older Home
Older homes often bring a sense of character—and their fair share of quirks. In this Sidcup property, the original staircase was built to outdated building regulations, with headroom clearances that didn’t meet today’s 2-metre minimum.
To meet modern standards, we’d have needed to reduce the size of an already small box room. But instead of compromising the homeowners’ space, we took a creative approach that allowed us to preserve the room while delivering a staircase solution that worked seamlessly.

Stripping Back to Build Forward
Every staircase renovation begins with a blank canvas. For this project, we stripped the staircase back to its first winder tread, leaving a solid base to start from. From there, I built a new landing structure—strong enough to support the existing staircase and serve as the foundation for the two new flights that would bridge the gap between the old house and the extension.
Blending Old and New with Care
Designing the new flights was where the magic happened. The extension side was straightforward, allowing us to create a completely new flight to fit the modern space. The original side, however, required more finesse.
The new staircase itself needed careful trimming and reshaping to fit around the existing storey newel. These precise adjustments ensured the new flight aligned perfectly with the original structure. It’s the kind of detail that takes time but makes all the difference in seamlessly blending the old with the new.

The Finished Staircase
The result? A stylish, practical staircase that connects the two spaces beautifully, preserving as much of the original home’s charm and functionality as possible. For the homeowners, it’s the perfect solution: easy access to their new space without sacrificing the character of their beloved older home.
