Having your staircase renovated should leave you pleased with the result. Unfortunately, this client had only recently had work completed and was already unhappy with both the appearance and the finish. When we saw it, we could understand why.

The existing newel posts had been covered in cladding, which was already starting to come apart. Joints overlapped, the detailing looked awkward, and the dark graphite finish gave the landing a heavy appearance. The spindle spacing also needed correcting.

The finish itself was poor, with visible patches around the pin holes. It looked as though the filler had sealed the surrounding timber before the graphite finish was applied, leaving an uneven, blotchy appearance around the fixings.

Our work began by stripping away all the existing cladding and replacing the newel posts. Removing the failing coverings allowed us to improve the proportions and create cleaner connections around the stairs and landing.

We also replaced the nosings and clad the landing apron, the vertical face beneath the landing balustrade. Bringing these details together created a more seamless appearance, with the timber following the edge of the landing and tying the whole installation together.

Most of the existing black metal spindles could be reused. Their decorative pattern remained part of the design, but we adjusted the spacing and added a couple of extra spindles to correct the gaps. Keeping the usable components meant we could retain a feature of the original design while addressing the problems around it.

To lighten the area, we changed the timber finish from graphite to a clear varnish. The lighter, natural appearance lets the grain show through and provides a warmer contrast against the black spindles.

The before and after photographs show how much difference the joinery and finishing details make. New posts, revised nosings and a neatly clad apron have given the landing a much more consistent appearance, while the change in finish makes the space feel brighter.

Before committing to a tradesperson, ask to see examples of their previous work and take time to look closely at the details. Pay attention to the joints, the finish and how neatly everything fits together. Make sure you’re happy with the standard of workmanship and clear about what’s included before giving the go-ahead.
