Loft conversions
Loft conversion staircase design
The staircase is often the hardest part of a loft conversion to get right. It has to land on the existing landing, clear the roof slope and fit around rooms that are already there, while still meeting Building Regulations.
Get the staircase worked out before the floor is opened up. Your drawing shows the stairwell opening the staircase actually needs, so your builder knows exactly where the trimmers go before a single joist is cut. Changing a drawing costs far less than changing a stairwell.

Staircases for spaces that weren’t built for one
Barn conversions, basements, mezzanines, extensions, flats split over two floors, and older houses where the stairs need to move. When the space comes first and the staircase comes second, the layout has to work around what’s already there.
If it can’t be done, we’ll tell you why and what would need to change to make it work.

What information do I need to provide?
Send your floor-to-floor height, available staircase length and width, opening dimensions and floor thickness. Include your preferred staircase width, layout or direction if known, project type and any notes. Photographs, sketches and architect drawings help us understand the space. If information is missing, we’ll explain what we need.
What if I don’t know what staircase layout will fit?
That is what the service is for. Send us the space and measurements and we’ll work out an appropriate layout, explaining any constraints we identify.
What if the staircase won’t fit?
We’ll tell you, and show you what would make it work. That could be winders instead of a landing, moving the stair, or changing the size of the opening.
Can you design a staircase for my loft conversion?
Yes. Get in touch with whatever you have so far, whether that’s photos, rough measurements, a sketch or your architect’s plans. We’ll look at it and tell you exactly what else we need to work out whether a staircase will fit and where it should go.
Can you design winder staircases?
Yes. We can work out 3-winder and 6-winder arrangements, as well as straight staircases and layouts with landings.
Do you check staircase pitch and rise/going?
Yes. The pack includes rise, going and pitch calculations. Final suitability and compliance must still be confirmed before manufacture or installation.
Can you check headroom?
Relevant headroom checks can be included where we have enough information about the opening, floor thickness and surrounding structure. We’ll let you know if further details are needed.
Do you only work in Kent?
No. Remote design is available anywhere in the UK. You send us measurements, photos or drawings, and we send back the PDF drawing pack. Site measuring visits are available in Kent and London.
Can you visit and measure the property?
Yes, for projects in Kent and London. Detailed measurement and design surveys are quoted separately; they are different from our free supply and installation quotation surveys.
Can I use the drawings with another staircase company?
Yes. The drawing pack is yours to take to your preferred builder, carpenter or staircase manufacturer. There is no requirement to buy the staircase from us.
What happens if my measurements are wrong?
The design depends on the information supplied. Let us know about any correction as soon as possible. All dimensions and site conditions must be checked before manufacture, ordering materials or installation.
Are revisions included?
One reasonable revision is included. If your project changes substantially or you need further revisions, we’ll discuss any additional work and cost before proceeding.
Can Axton’s Staircases manufacture or install the staircase afterwards?
You can ask us for a separate supply or installation quote. Installation depends on the project and our service area; there is no obligation to use us.
