We replaced a dangerous staircase in Rainham where a past extension left a 400mm drop between treads. Removing one tread gave enough headroom for a proper landing. Finished with oak handrails, oak base rails and 14mm matt black spindles. Rainham, Kent.

We got called out to a property in Rainham where a previous extension had left the staircase in a bad state. One of the treads had a 400mm drop to the next, which is not something you want in a family home. The client had building experience and had already moved the trimmer 600mm to make room for a new staircase, but he could not get the headroom to work. His numbers gave him 1810mm, and that is not enough.

Working it out

That is where we came in. We looked at the numbers and worked out that by reducing the tread count by one compared to the original staircase, we could gain enough room for a proper landing and bring the headroom up to 1950mm. Still not quite building regs, but the original staircase with its 400mm death drop had already been signed off, so the bar was not exactly high. We always prefer to work within the regulations. Sometimes the existing structure makes that impossible, and this was one of those jobs. The improvement was significant either way.

The finish

Once the staircase was in, the client chose oak handrails and base rails with 14mm matt black spindles. The oak against the black keeps things clean and modern without trying too hard, and it gives the hallway a bit of weight that the old setup never had.

The client was over the moon with the result, which is always the best part of a job like this. A staircase that was genuinely dangerous is now something the whole family can use without a second thought.

A fitted understairs storage unit and replacement balustrade completed at Chantry Close, Hartley, with shaker fronts, push-to-open drawers and black metal spindles.

The space under a staircase gets wasted in most houses. Usually it is a cupboard door, a hoover behind it, and the vague plan to sort it out one day. This project at Chantry Close in Hartley was the day that finally happened.

Alongside the storage, the balustrade needed replacing too. It had been there long enough.

Design first

The unit was drawn up in SketchUp before anything was cut, with column positions, drawer counts and door placement all agreed with the client before a single piece of timber moved. Some people think that step is unnecessary. Those people tend to pay for it later.

The storage unit

The carcass is MDF with shaker fronts throughout. The two centre columns each have a stack of push-to-open drawers on soft-close undermounted runners, which keeps the front clean and handle-free but still practical to use day to day.

The third column was a bit trickier. The shape of the space ruled out drawer runners, so that section was finished with a hinged shaker door and a push-to-open catch instead. From the front it still reads as part of the same run, which was the main thing.

The larger end panel has a pull-out coat rail. Most hallways could do with one. Most hallways do not have one.

The balustrade

The old balustrade came out and was replaced with pine handrails and base rails, round matt black metal spindles and a wall rail on matt black brackets. The spindle profile was kept plain on purpose. Ornate spindles have a way of looking dated before the paint is dry.

Handover

Everything was handed over to the decorators at completion, ready to be primed and drench coated in one colour. Once that is done, the matt black ironmongery will be the only thing that stands out from the rest of the scheme. That was the plan from the start.

A bespoke oak staircase renovation in Hartley, Kent. This project used oak cladding and full-height spindles to create a clean, modern feature that fits the home perfectly.

This recent project took us to a family home in Hartley, Kent, where the client wanted to give their dated staircase a complete refresh. They had always wanted a special staircase and now is the time they chose to do it. The original flight was a little squeaky but solid. The traditional turned spindles and the carpet weren’t doing the space any favours. The goal? A unique feature that uses traditional warm materials.

The Design Process

Before getting started, we had to take some thorough measurements to make sure everything would fit. Since we were keeping the original staircase and cladding over the top with oak we had to be sure that the spindles would have the room to run from the staircase, past the apron and to the landing handrail plumb. Otherwise it would stand out if the spindles were leant over. We were in luck! We had 2mm to play with.

We then took these measurements to the computer and created the staircase in a 3D visual rendering. Not only does this help our client see what we have designed for them, it also helps us see any issues that might arise.

Next we tackled the newel posts. The newel posts are structural elements and so we had to plan out how we were going to remove them and rebuild the string to do the same job the newels were doing.

Once all this had been thought out and agreed by the client, we were ready to start.

The Transformation

The original staircase remained in place, but we completely overclad it in oak to give it a fresh, clean finish and it also removed the squeaks. We replaced a bullnose step at the base to give the entrance a softer, more inviting flow. We installed full-height oak spindles that run continuously from the ground floor to the landing, creating a seamless flow through the space. These aren’t just for show, these spindles give the handrail most of its strength and also the staircase itself taking out any bounce it may have had.

This change created a striking visual line that draws the eye upward, adding a sense of height.

The oak cladding was carefully cut and fitted to tie in with the existing doors, flooring, and skirting, creating a cohesive look. The natural finish brings warmth and consistency to the space, making it feel thoughtfully designed and updated.

The Finish

Once all the joinery was fitted we then applied the finish, in this case it was a clear satin, to protect the oak and give it a little sheen to give a light effect that the client asked for.

The finished staircase now ties in with the rest of the home and makes a great first impression as soon as you walk through the front door. It's also more practical day-to-day, with an easier-to-clean surface and more space on the landing.

Thinking about updating your staircase? We work with homeowners across Kent and the South East to design, build, and install staircases that fit your space and your style.
A complete guide to metal staircase spindles for Kent homeowners. Covers styles, durability, costs, safety, installation, timber comparisons, and why metal paired with oak rails has become a popular upgrade across the South East.

A staircase upgrade can transform your home, and metal spindles offer one of the most dramatic changes for the effort involved. Swap dated timber spindles for modern metal alternatives and the shift is immediate - cleaner lines, a lighter feel, and a finish that brings the whole hallway up to date.

Across Kent, from period properties in Medway to modern homes in Gravesham, metal stair spindles have become the upgrade of choice for homeowners who want current style without the upheaval of a full staircase replacement.

Why Metal Spindles Are Replacing Timber Across the South East

Metal spindles tick boxes that timber struggles with. They look sharp, need minimal maintenance, and work across almost any interior style. Whether your home is a Victorian terrace, a 1930s semi, or a contemporary new build, metal staircase spindles adapt without looking out of place.

The shift in popularity comes down to three things: durability, aesthetics, and practicality. Homeowners want staircases that can handle daily family life, look current rather than dated, and don't demand constant attention. Metal spindles deliver on all three.

Styles of Metal Staircase Spindles

The flexibility starts with design. Different spindle profiles create very different looks, so choosing the right style matters.

Round Metal Spindles

Round bars bring a softer, more traditional feel. They suit homes with curved details and gentler lines, working particularly well in period properties where a completely modern look would jar. The rounded profile catches light differently to square spindles, creating subtle shadows that add depth to the staircase.

Square Metal Spindles

Square bars offer clean, straight lines that suit minimal or contemporary interiors. They create a more structured, architectural look and are currently the most popular choice in modern Kent homes. Black square metal spindles paired with oak rails have become something of a signature look across the region.

Decorative Metal Balustrade Spindles

For homeowners who want more visual interest, decorative spindles add character without overwhelming the space. Twisted bars, basket designs, or subtle geometric patterns create focal points while maintaining the clean lines that make metal spindles appealing in the first place.

Metal vs Timber Spindles: The Practical Comparison

Style matters, but so does performance. Metal spindles outpace timber in several practical areas that affect day-to-day living.

Timber spindles mark easily, especially in busy family homes. Scuffs from bags, knocks from furniture, and general wear show up quickly on painted timber. Metal holds its finish far better and disguises minor contact that would leave visible marks on wood.

Maintenance requirements differ significantly. Timber spindles need repainting every few years to stay looking fresh. Metal spindles, particularly powder-coated varieties, maintain their finish for years without attention. A basic clean handles most situations - no sanding, no repainting, no ongoing cost.

Durability favours metal in the long run. Timber can split, warp, or work loose over time. Metal stays rigid and secure, making it the better choice for staircases that see heavy use.

Pairing Metal Spindles with Oak Handrails and Baserails

The combination of metal spindles with oak handrails and baserails has become the most requested upgrade in our Kent projects, and for good reason. The contrast between warm timber and cool metal creates balance - oak softens the metal's industrial edge while metal sharpens the oak's traditional character.

This pairing works across interior styles. In modern homes, it prevents the staircase from feeling too cold or stark. In traditional properties, it freshens the space without erasing character. The natural grain of oak adds warmth and texture that complements rather than competes with the clean lines of metal spindles.

The practical side matters too. Oak is hard-wearing and ages well, developing a richer tone over time. Combined with the longevity of metal spindles, you get a staircase upgrade that looks better with age rather than showing wear.

Most clients choose natural oak or a light stain to maximize the contrast, though darker stains work well in certain schemes. Black metal spindles with natural oak creates the strongest visual impact and suits the widest range of interiors.

Safety Considerations for Families and Pets

Safety drives many staircase upgrades, particularly in family homes. Metal spindles provide reliable protection when installed correctly, with spacing that prevents children or pets from slipping through while maintaining open sightlines through the staircase.

The strength of metal spindles also matters for active households. They stay firmly in place under pressure - important when children use the staircase heavily or pets navigate the stairs at speed.

Installation and Retrofit: What to Expect

Understanding the installation process helps set realistic expectations. Metal spindles cannot simply slot into existing timber handrails and baserails - the fixing systems are fundamentally different.

What Needs Replacing

Existing handrails and baserails typically need replacing when upgrading to metal spindles. Timber rails have grooves designed for timber spindles, while metal spindles require different fixing methods. This means your upgrade includes new handrails and baserails, which actually works in your favour - the whole assembly looks fresh and cohesive rather than trying to marry new spindles to worn timber rails.

New Build vs Retrofit

New staircases offer complete freedom. We can plan spacing, height, and design from scratch to suit your exact requirements.

Retrofitting takes more planning but produces excellent results when measured and installed correctly. We remove the old spindles, handrails, and baserails, then fit new components that match your chosen style. The string (the diagonal timber that supports the stairs) usually stays in place, keeping costs down while delivering a complete visual transformation.

Timeline

A typical retrofit installation takes two to three days from start to finish. Day one covers removal and preparation, day two handles the main installation, and day three deals with finishing touches and cleanup. New build installations vary depending on the staircase complexity but typically fall within a similar timeframe.

Long-Term Maintenance and Lifespan

Metal spindles need minimal ongoing care, which is a major factor in their popularity. Most are powder-coated or treated to resist rust and marking, so maintenance rarely goes beyond occasional cleaning.

In typical domestic settings, expect metal spindles to last decades without refinishing. They don't require the cyclical repainting that timber demands, and the finish holds up well to daily contact. When cleaning is needed, a damp cloth handles most situations - no special products or treatments required.

The longevity makes economic sense too. While the initial upgrade costs more than replacing timber with timber, the absence of ongoing maintenance costs means metal spindles often work out cheaper over a ten or fifteen year period.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Getting the details right makes the difference between a good upgrade and a great one. Watch out for these common pitfalls:

Choosing the wrong spindle style for your space. Heavily decorative spindles can overwhelm a small staircase, making it feel busy and cluttered. Simple profiles work better in compact spaces.

Ignoring the overall scheme. Your staircase needs to work with the rest of your home. Black spindles suit most interiors, but other finishes might clash with existing features or colour schemes.

Getting spacing wrong. Too wide and the staircase looks sparse; too narrow and it feels caged. Proper spacing depends on the spindle profile and the staircase dimensions.

Skimping on rail quality. Budget oak rails with poor grain or shows the finger joint lamination undermine the whole upgrade. Quality rails make the difference between a professional finish and something that looks cheap.

DIY installation without experience. Metal spindle installation requires accurate measuring and proper fixing techniques. Poor installation shows immediately and creates safety issues.

How Metal Spindles Transform Kent Staircases

Recent projects across the region show the impact clearly. A dated staircase with chunky timber spindles and worn rails becomes a clean, current feature that lifts the whole ground floor. The change is immediate and substantial - clients regularly tell us it feels like a different house.

The visual impact goes beyond the staircase itself. A refreshed staircase makes hallways feel lighter and more spacious. The clean lines of metal spindles draw the eye upward, making ceilings feel higher and spaces more open.

Metal Spindles Cost and Investment Value

While costs vary depending on staircase size and chosen materials, expect a typical straight-flight staircase upgrade with metal spindles and oak rails to represent a mid-range home improvement investment. The absence of ongoing maintenance costs and the visual transformation make it worthwhile for most homeowners.

The upgrade also adds value when selling. Modern, well-maintained staircases appeal to buyers and often feature prominently in property photos. The investment typically returns well in both daily enjoyment and eventual resale value.

Ready to Upgrade Your Staircase?

If you're planning a staircase renovation with metal spindles in Kent, Medway, Gravesham, or the wider South East, Axton's Staircases handles the full process. We added new oak caps, fitted an oak handrail and pine baserail, repainted the original posts, and finished the job with 10mm toughened glass. The result is a cleaner and more current look that suits the home.

This staircase refurbishment project in the Bromley area shows how targeted updates can completely change the look of a home without replacing the full structure. Updating a dated staircase while keeping much of the original structure can make a big difference to a home, and this project is a good example of how far a few focused changes can go.

This project took place in Orpington. The client wanted a cleaner and more modern look and a full staircase refurbishment without replacing the entire staircase. The goal was to keep the main structure and refresh the elements that would change the look and feel straight away.

We kept the existing newel posts and cut the tops to take new oak flat caps. This kept the layout the same but gave the posts a sharper and more up to date finish.

The old handrail and baserail were removed and replaced with an oak handrail and a pine baserail. Once fitted, we templated the glass and sent it off to be cut and toughened.

Before the glass was fitted, we had to deal with the heavy reddish brown stain across the staircase. It took a few coats of white paint to get it covered properly. The new handrail and caps were finished with Osmo to bring the colour in line with the doors.

We then fitted the 10mm toughened glass panels as part of the new glass balustrade as part of a new glass balustrade setup on square brushed steel brackets. The staircase still follows the original layout but now feels cleaner, brighter and far more in keeping with the rest of the home.

If you want a staircase refurbishment or glass balustrade installation in Orpington and the surrounding areas or the surrounding areas, we can advise on what can stay, what needs changing, and the best materials to use.
A recent staircase renovation in Gravesend, Kent. We replaced worn parts with solid oak components, added temporary safety features, and gave everything a clean new look. A smart update that made a big difference in space, safety and style.

This recent staircase renovation in Gravesend was all about making subtle changes that delivered a big difference.

We started by replacing the bottom newel post and tread with a solid oak post and a new bullnose tread. That small adjustment gave the hallway noticeably more space, improving the flow and making it easier to move around the staircase.

Next, we removed all of the old white spindles across both floors and fitted new oak handrails and baserails. To keep things safe while waiting on the glass, we cut and fitted temporary MDF infills to prevent the staircase from being open. This was mainly to stop the client’s dog from diving through.

Once the glass was off for cutting and toughening, our finisher stepped in to sand down and repaint all the white components, giving them a clean, sharp look. The new oak parts were treated with a clear matt finish to preserve the natural tone and feel of the timber.

The glass was then fitted using chrome brackets and it makes the perfect finishing touch.

The client was genuinely delighted with the final result, especially happy to see the back of the white spindles.

Think MDF staircases squeak and break? The truth is, poor installation causes those problems, not the material. MDF is strong, stable, and cost-effective when fitted correctly, making it a smart choice for modern staircases.

Imagine stepping onto a brand new staircase only to hear a loud squeak with every step. Many homeowners immediately assume MDF is to blame, but that's not the case.

Over the years, I've heard plenty of homeowners say they don't want MDF in their staircase because it squeaks or won't last. The reality is very different. MDF isn't the problem. Poor installation is.

Why MDF Staircases Get Blamed?

When a staircase creaks or moves, it's easy to assume the boards are at fault. In truth, these issues usually come down to how the staircase was put together. With more expensive materials, people often hire a more skilled fitter, so the results are better. With MDF, the material takes the blame even though the cause is usually the same: bad installation.

Why Does Your MDF Staircase Squeak?

If your MDF staircase is making noise, the material itself is not to blame. Squeaks usually come from the way it was put together. Common issues include:

Glue blocks that weren't fixed properly

Risers that haven't been secured correctly or with the correct fixings

Loose or missing wedges, which are designed to hold treads and risers firmly in place

Recently I repaired a staircase where only three 20mm screws had been used on each tread. Within a short time the joints had failed, the treads began to move, and the squeaks followed. When wedges aren't fitted correctly, movement and noise are inevitable.

The Facts About MDF

MDF has a lot going for it:

Strong and stable when fixed correctly

More affordable than solid timber

Smooth finish that's perfect for painting and modern styles

Why Installation Matters

A staircase built with MDF will be just as solid as one made with other materials if it's installed properly. Using the right fixings, ensuring good support, and taking care with the details make all the difference. Get this right, and you'll have a staircase that feels secure underfoot for years.

Where MDF Works Best

MDF is a smart choice for treads and risers that will be covered up by carpet. It offers a clean, consistent look, handles everyday use, and keeps costs down without compromising on performance. If the customer wanted a carpet runner, I would suggest using a natural timber product.

I would even argue that using MDF is better than pine treads and risers, simply because it's more stable. As temperatures in houses fluctuate, you get less movement in an MDF staircase, and over time this will cause fewer squeaks.

Final Word

MDF doesn't squeak.
Some staircase projects fit right into place, while others need a bit more thought. This job in Hythe ran smoothly overall, but getting the headroom right was a challenge that took some creative problem-solving.

The challenge? The stairwell had been constructed long before today’s building regulations were in place. The main issue was achieving the required two metres of headroom between the bottom winder box and the joists above it. Initially, this seemed like a tricky hurdle, but with some careful adjustments to the winder box sizes, I was able to create the necessary clearance without making the winder boxes look too small or out of proportion.

<img src="https://axtons-staircases.co.uk/content/images/2025/03/IMG_0468.webp" class="kg-image" alt="Newly installed wooden staircase with winder steps in an unfinished space. The balustrade, with its clean lines and smooth finish, adds a stylish yet functional touch to the space. The client opted for primed white spindles, which not only complement the overall aesthetic but also help reduce decorating time later on, making the finishing process much easier.

The end result is a staircase that not only fits seamlessly within the existing architecture but also meets modern safety standards without compromising on aesthetics. This project is a great example of how the right planning and craftsmanship can overcome structural challenges while delivering a high-quality, practical, and visually appealing staircase.

If you're considering a staircase refurbishment or installation, feel free to get in touch—we're always happy to discuss your ideas and find the best solution for your space.

<img src="https://axtons-staircases.co.uk/content/images/2025/03/IMG_0470.webp" class="kg-image" alt="Upper floor balustrade with white wooden spindles and handrail overlooking the staircase.
A loft conversion in London almost lost an entire room—until we stepped in. With a smart double winder staircase design, we proved that “impossible” wasn’t the case. See how we solved the space challenge while meeting regulations and delivering a stunning, functional staircase.

Sometimes the most satisfying projects are the ones that other tradespeople have already written off as "impossible." That's exactly what happened last week when I got a call from a frustrated homeowner in Tulse Hill, London who was halfway through a loft conversion.

The Challenge: A Staircase SOS

The story began with a panicked phone call. The customer explained that the company originally hired to install their staircase had completely ghosted them - leaving their loft conversion project hanging in limbo. Not ideal when you've already got half your house torn apart!

When I arrived for the site visit, the situation became clear. The homeowner desperately wanted a double winder staircase to avoid demolishing an entire wall and losing a valuable room in their home. The previous stair fitter had apparently told them it simply couldn't be done - the space was too tight, the angles wouldn't work, regulations wouldn't allow it.

Challenge accepted.

Why Double Winders Matter in Loft Conversions

For those not familiar with staircase terminology, a double winder involves two 90-degree turns in the staircase, effectively creating a switchback that can navigate tight spaces while maintaining proper step dimensions. In loft conversions, they're worth their weight in gold because they can dramatically reduce the footprint needed for access to your new space.

The alternative? A straight staircase that would have ploughed straight through an existing wall, effectively turning two rooms into one larger space. In today's property market, losing an entire room is simply not an option for most homeowners.

Making the "Impossible" Possible

After taking comprehensive measurements and reviewing the building regulations, I worked out that we could indeed fit a double winder staircase in the available space. The headroom was admittedly tight on one side, but still within the regulatory requirements - sometimes those extra few millimetres make all the difference!

It required some creative reconfiguration of the design and precise calculations to make it work, but that's exactly the kind of problem-solving that makes this job interesting. The regulations for staircases are quite specific about minimum tread depth, maximum riser height, and minimum headroom clearance - but they also allow for some flexibility in winder configurations.

The Installation Process

The entire installation, including the staircase and balustrade, was completed in just one day. We started by removing the temporary access ladder and preparing the opening between floors. Once the main structural components were secured, we fitted the treads, risers, balustrade, and handrails.

The pine/MDF staircase was designed with function in mind—maximising space while meeting all regulations. With the site still a work in progress, the priority was creating a safe, well-built access point that fit seamlessly into the project. The site was still very much a work in progress, but the staircase provided safe and efficient access to the loft, ensuring the project could move forward as planned.

The Result: One Very Happy Customer

The look on the homeowners' faces when they realised they wouldn't have to sacrifice an entire room was priceless. They'd been told by multiple people that what they wanted wasn't possible, and had reluctantly accepted they'd need to adjust their plans.

Being able to deliver not just a functional staircase but the exact solution they originally hoped for - that's the kind of job satisfaction you can't put a price on.

Lessons for Your Own Loft Conversion

A well-planned staircase can make or break a loft conversion. Finding a stair fitter who thinks creatively and works within regulations can be the difference between losing space and making the most of it.
Keeping your staircase in top shape improves both safety and style. From repairs to upgrades, small changes can make a big impact with minimal disruption.

Keeping your staircase in good shape is important for both safety and style. Over time, stairs can start to wear down, leading to creaky steps, loose railings, or bigger structural problems. Fixing these issues early helps prevent further damage and keeps your staircase looking and working as it should.

Common Staircase Problems

One of the most common problems is when stairs start to shift or feel unsteady. This can happen because of aging materials, poor construction, or years of daily use. Tightening loose parts, replacing worn-out steps, or securing wobbly railings can make a big difference in keeping everything stable. Squeaky steps are another frequent issue, often caused by wood rubbing against fixings that have loosened over time. A solid repair can stop the noise and make each step feel firm again.

Enhancing the Look of Your Staircase

If you're looking to update your staircase, small changes can have a big impact. Swapping out old spindles for a new style or upgrading the handrail can give it a fresh look without the cost of a full replacement. Some people prefer a modern touch, like glass panels or sleek metal details, while others want to restore traditional wooden features with refinishing and repairs.

When Major Repairs Are Needed

In some cases, bigger fixes are needed. If steps are starting to sag or the main supports are damaged, reinforcing or replacing parts of the structure might be necessary. Leaving these issues unchecked can lead to more serious problems that affect safety. Taking care of them early ensures your staircase stays strong for years to come.

Simple Updates, Big Impact

Making improvements doesn’t have to mean a complete remodel. Simple repairs and thoughtful updates can refresh your space with minimal disruption. Whether it’s fixing a small issue or making design changes to improve durability and style, keeping your staircase in top shape is always a good idea.

Get Professional Help

If your staircase needs repairs or an upgrade, we’re here to help. Get in touch with us today for expert advice and professional service to bring your staircase back to its best.

Glass balustrades bring a sleek, modern feel to any staircase, but should you choose bracket-mounted or inset glass? Each option offers distinct benefits in terms of aesthetics, maintenance, and installation. Discover the pros and cons to help you decide which suits your home best.

Glass balustrades offer a sleek, modern look while maintaining an open, airy feel in a staircase design. Whether you're considering a staircase renovation or a brand-new installation, choosing the right balustrade system is essential for both aesthetics and functionality. One of the key decisions when installing glass balustrades is choosing between two main fixing methods: bracket-mounted glass panels or inset glass panels, where the glass is housed within the handrail and baserail. Both options have their advantages, and the best choice depends on your design preference, maintenance considerations, and installation requirements. Here, we explore the pros and cons of each approach.

Bracket-Mounted Glass Balustrades

<img src="https://axtons-staircases.co.uk/content/images/2025/02/IMG_0195.jpeg.webp" class="kg-image" alt="Bespoke staircase with oak handrail, newel post, and glass balustrade. They are easier to install because the glass is fixed externally, eliminating the need for deep grooves in the handrail and baserail. This method also allows for simple glass replacement, as individual panels can be removed and replaced with minimal effort. It is compatible with various staircase types, including open, cut-string, and straight-flight staircases. However, this option has more exposed edges, which may require more frequent cleaning. The visible brackets, although subtle, are a feature some homeowners may not prefer. Generally, for interior use, we suggest either a round or a square type of bracket. These brackets come in a range of colours that match other fittings like door handles, socket faces, and hinges.

Bracket-mounted glass is also a great option if large objects need to be moved around. Being able to remove the glass offers more room for manoeuvre, and it protects the glass from potential damage during the moving process.

Inset Glass Balustrades

Inset glass balustrades offer a seamless, integrated look, as the glass sits neatly within the timberwork, providing a refined blend of traditional and modern aesthetics. This method offers increased stability since the glass is fully supported by the surrounding timber, reducing movement or flexing. With no visible brackets or fixings, the design remains uninterrupted, making it ideal for those who prefer a cleaner, classic appearance. It is also easier to maintain, as the encased edges prevent dust and dirt from accumulating along the sides of the glass.

However, the installation process is slightly more complex due to the use of a two-part baserail, which increases installation time. This does not increase the overall cost, as the extra material required for the two-part baserail is approximately equivalent to the cost of brackets. If a panel gets damaged, replacing it is more involved compared to a bracket-mounted system.

Which Glass Balustrade Is Right for You?

<img src="https://axtons-staircases.co.uk/content/images/2025/02/Image-12.jpeg.webp" class="kg-image" alt="Bespoke staircase with Walnut newel posts, handrail, and glass balustrades. If you prefer a contemporary, floating appearance and need an easier-to-remove option, bracket-mounted glass may be the way to go. If you want a seamless, integrated look with enhanced stability, inset glass could be the better choice.

Both options enhance the aesthetic appeal and safety of a staircase while allowing natural light to flow through a space. Whether you’re planning a new staircase or updating an existing one, considering the long-term maintenance and design style will help you make the right choice. Ultimately, the decision is yours, and the right choice will depend on what fits your preferences and needs best.
Maximise Space with an Alternate Tread Staircase

When space is limited, traditional staircases may not be the most practical option. That’s where alternate tread staircases come in—a smart, space-saving solution designed to enhance accessibility in compact areas. Whether you're converting a loft, adding a mezzanine, or optimising a small home, these innovative staircases provide a stylish and efficient way to navigate multiple levels without compromising functionality.

What Makes Alternate Tread Staircases Unique?

Unlike conventional stairs, alternate tread staircases feature a distinct stepping pattern, where each step alternates between left and right foot placement. This clever design allows for a steeper incline without sacrificing comfort, making them ideal for areas where space is at a premium. However, proper design and installation are essential to ensure both safety and usability.

Benefits of an Alternate Tread Staircase

One of the biggest advantages of alternate tread staircases is their space efficiency. They take up significantly less room than traditional stairs, making them an excellent choice for loft conversions, mezzanines, and compact interiors. Compared to ladders, they offer a safer, more stable alternative, allowing for easier and more comfortable movement between levels. Plus, with a variety of materials and finishes available, they can be tailored to suit any interior style, from contemporary metal to classic wooden designs.

Important Safety & Compliance Considerations

While alternate tread staircases are an effective space-saving option, they must adhere to BS 5395-4:2011 regulations to ensure safety and usability. To comply, the step rise should be between 170mm and 220mm, while the depth, or going, needs to fall between 220mm and 300mm. Due to their steeper incline, which typically ranges from 48.6° to 63.4°, it’s crucial to maintain a minimum headroom clearance of 2000mm for safe access. Handrails must be installed on both sides for support, and steps should overlap to enhance stability and reduce the risk of slipping.

While these staircases are practical, they aren’t suited for every situation. Their steep incline makes them less ideal for carrying heavy items, and they should only be installed when traditional staircases aren’t an option. Used correctly, they provide a functional and stylish solution for space-limited areas.

Where Are Alternate Tread Staircases Most Effective?

Alternate tread staircases work best as secondary access solutions rather than main staircases. They are commonly used in loft conversions where space is restricted, mezzanines that require an efficient staircase, and storage rooms or home offices where accessibility is needed but space is tight. In industrial and commercial settings, they are often found leading to storage platforms or machinery access points where efficiency is key.

That being said, if there’s room for a traditional staircase, that should always be the first choice. These staircases are ideal when space constraints make conventional designs impractical.

Axton’s Expertise in Space-Saving Staircases

At Axton’s Staircases, we specialise in bespoke alternate tread staircases designed to maximise space while maintaining safety and style.
Fixing a Poor Staircase Installation

Some projects stand out, and this one in Leigh was definitely an interesting challenge. I was called in to clad a staircase that had already been installed, but as soon as I arrived for the survey, I realised the situation was more complicated than I’d expected.

The customer was clearly unhappy. He had envisioned a modern staircase with solid oak newel posts running from the ground floor to the ceiling of the first floor, complemented by glass balustrades on the landing. Instead, what he had was a makeshift setup with added carcassing timbers that simply weren’t doing the job. He asked if I could clad over the posts and timbers to ‘fix’ the issue.

I refused.

Solid Oak Newel Posts & Glass Panels

Cladding over the problem wouldn’t have given him the look or quality he wanted. Instead, I explained my concerns and proposed a better solution: removing the existing newel posts and carcassing timbers entirely and replacing them with 6-metre solid oak newel posts. This way, he’d get exactly what he originally envisioned—without compromising on strength or appearance.

Once the plan was agreed upon, I couldn’t remove the old setup fast enough. Stripping everything back to a blank canvas gave me the freedom to build the bespoke staircase properly. I really enjoyed the precision work involved in aligning the oak newel posts so that they remained level from top to bottom—despite the walls not being perfectly straight.

A Stunning Staircase Makeover

One of the trickiest parts was cleaning the glass balustrades on the stairwell after everything was completed.
Some staircases are so uninspiring that capturing a "before" photo doesn’t even cross your mind. This was one of those cases—trust me, you’re not missing much. Consider it a favour!

The homeowners had recently moved in and were determined to make the house their own. One of their key projects was transforming their staircase, which featured dated white spindles, into a modern statement piece. After all, a staircase is often the first thing you see when you walk through the door, and first impressions matter.

Upgrading the Foundation with Refined Newel Posts

To create a more striking and cohesive look, I replaced the original 90mm newel posts with larger 120mm posts at the staircase base. The smaller posts seemed lost in the space, but the larger ones give the staircase a refined and substantial presence—perfect for a modern home.

Sleek and Contemporary with Glass Panels

The finishing touch was adding 10mm toughened glass panels, mounted on polished chrome brackets. These panels completely transformed the look, infusing the staircase with a sleek and contemporary vibe. While I’ve yet to see it fully finished with the carpet installed, I can already picture how stunning the final result will be.

If you’re ready to transform your staircase into a modern statement piece, contact us today for a free consultation!

This project has to be one of my favourites so far, showcasing modern staircase design tailored for a stunning new build in Bromley. It involved installing two brand-new staircases from the ground floor to the second floor. The main staircase was the real showstopper, featuring American Black Walnut treads paired with matching handrails, complemented by sleek 16mm black, metal, straight spindles.

As this was a new build staircase, it was a blank canvas—perfect for working my magic on a modern staircase design that complemented the home.—perfect for working my magic. Fitting the staircases was fairly straightforward. With them being straight flights, it was simply a matter of hooking them into place and securing them to the wall. Once that was done, it was time to fit the newel posts, handrails, baserails, nosings, and aprons—this is where the staircase really started to take shape.

Now, here’s where things got a bit more challenging. Because the spindles were round, the handrails and baserails couldn’t be grooved to accommodate them. Instead, I had to carefully mark out each spindle position on the baserail, then use a laser level to align and mark the corresponding holes on the handrail.

After that, I drilled every single hole in both the handrail and baserail, then cut all the spindles to size using a grinder before fitting them. It was certainly labour-intensive, but the end result made it all worthwhile.

The finished staircase is stunning—its modern staircase design enhances the aesthetic of this Bromley new build while serving as a striking centrepiece.—its modern, minimalist design creates a striking yet elegant centrepiece for the space. It’s a true testament to how careful craftsmanship and attention to detail can transform a staircase into so much more than just a functional feature.
