Fixing a Poor Staircase Installation
Some projects stand out, and this one in Leigh was definitely an interesting challenge. I was called in to clad a staircase that had already been installed, but as soon as I arrived for the survey, I realised the situation was more complicated than I’d expected.

The customer was clearly unhappy. He had envisioned a modern staircase with solid oak newel posts running from the ground floor to the ceiling of the first floor, complemented by glass balustrades on the landing. Instead, what he had was a makeshift setup with added carcassing timbers that simply weren’t doing the job. He asked if I could clad over the posts and timbers to ‘fix’ the issue.
I refused.
Solid Oak Newel Posts & Glass Panels
Cladding over the problem wouldn’t have given him the look or quality he wanted. Instead, I explained my concerns and proposed a better solution: removing the existing newel posts and carcassing timbers entirely and replacing them with 6-metre solid oak newel posts. This way, he’d get exactly what he originally envisioned—without compromising on strength or appearance.
Once the plan was agreed upon, I couldn’t remove the old setup fast enough. Stripping everything back to a blank canvas gave me the freedom to build the bespoke staircase properly. I really enjoyed the precision work involved in aligning the oak newel posts so that they remained level from top to bottom—despite the walls not being perfectly straight.

A Stunning Staircase Makeover
One of the trickiest parts was cleaning the glass balustrades on the stairwell after everything was completed. But the effort was worth it—the customer was over the moon, finally getting the modern staircase design he had envisioned
