This project was a safety-focused upgrade for our client. Over time, the original landing balustrade had become loose, leaving the client, now older, concerned about its reliability and overall safety.

A landing staircase with traditional turned spindles and a wooden handrail before a modern safety upgrade.

To address these concerns, we replaced the old turned newel posts with sturdier 90mm square newels, adding significant strength to the balustrade. We also installed an extra newel post at the center of the landing to eliminate any flex in the handrail over its length.

Newly installed staircase balustrade with 90mm square newel posts and straight spindles for added strength and stability.

To further enhance stability, we used 41mm stop-chamfered spindles. The chunky size of these spindles not only improved the overall aesthetics but also gave the handrail additional strength, ensuring a more robust and secure structure.

For added support, we fitted a wall rail, allowing the client to use both sides for better stability when navigating the stairs.

The client was delighted with the results, feeling much safer and more confident moving around their home.
