This staircase refurbishment project in the Bromley area shows how targeted updates can completely change the look of a home without replacing the full structure. Updating a dated staircase while keeping much of the original structure can make a big difference to a home, and this project is a good example of how far a few focused changes can go.

This project took place in Orpington. The client wanted a cleaner and more modern look and a full staircase refurbishment without replacing the entire staircase. The goal was to keep the main structure and refresh the elements that would change the look and feel straight away.

We kept the existing newel posts and cut the tops to take new oak flat caps. This kept the layout the same but gave the posts a sharper and more up to date finish.

The old handrail and baserail were removed and replaced with an oak handrail and a pine baserail. Once fitted, we templated the glass and sent it off to be cut and toughened.

Before the glass was fitted, we had to deal with the heavy reddish brown stain across the staircase. It took a few coats of white paint to get it covered properly. The new handrail and caps were finished with Osmo to bring the colour in line with the doors.

We then fitted the 10mm toughened glass panels as part of the new glass balustrade as part of a new glass balustrade setup on square brushed steel brackets. The staircase still follows the original layout but now feels cleaner, brighter and far more in keeping with the rest of the home.
